Zu den Chiemseemalern zählend, erlangte Maier-Erding gerade durch Porträts seine Bekanntheit. Er hatte zunächst die Münchner Kunstgewerbeschule und Akademie besucht, später studierte er in Holland die niederländische Malerei und wurde schließlich Mitglied der Künstlervereinigung "Frauenwörther".
