Min. rest. ansonsten altersbedingter guter Zustand. Deutschland, 16. Jh. H x B ca. 25,5 x 21,5 cm, ger.

Oil/Panel. Portrait of Johannes Draconites (birth name Drach), who was born circa 1494 in Karlstadt and died in 1566 in Wittenberg. After studying this portrait for some time, Dr. Ingo Sandner came to the conclusion that it is a work by Barthel Bruyn the Elder (1493 Wesel ? - 1555 Cologne). He bases his argumentation on the style of the underdrawing, which is comparable to other known sketches by the artist. One of the main comparable works that allowed this attribution was “Portrait of a Man from the Strauss Family” in the National Gallery in London. However, the present work is notable not only for its author. It is also an incredibly naturalistic and evocative likeness of the highest artistic quality, to which the exceptional underdrawing testifies. The work is also the first portrait of the Reformation era German theologist and Humanist Johann Draconites. The version in oils in the Philadelphia Museum of Art is definitely a copy after the present work. Minimal restorations, otherwise very good condition. Germany, 16. c. 25,5 x 21,5 cm, framed.
