Der durchaus fruchtbare Künstler Hilgers verstand es, naturgetreue Landschaften im Stil der Düsseldorfer Schule zu malen. Hier kombinierte er eine harmonische Farbgebung mit romantisch-fantastischen Figurenstaffage. Insbesondere Winterlandschaften ließen ihm zu Lebzeiten eine große Anerkennung zukommen.
