Der schweizer Maler, Radierer und Bildhauer Stauffer-Bern hatte in München studiert und sich in Berlin zunächst als Porträtmaler niedergelassen. Zu Ruhm gelangte er, nachdem er sich dem Kupferstich und den Radierungen zuwandte, allerdings sorgte eine unglückliche Beziehung für den Suizid des Künstlers im Alter von nur 34 Jahren.
